Scott Fitzgerald lived during the time of the Great Depression, where money was low In almost every household. This pushed Fitzgerald favorite topic of a poor boy becoming rich Into the American public. Dexter, the mall character In Winter Dreams went from being an average boy that was living a good life to a rich man because of the love he had for a wealthy girl named Judy Jones. Through, Winter Dreams Fitzgerald explained the major events of his own life. Although many critics believed that Fitzgerald had a great talent in writing and he lived a great life, some live that he wasted the talent that was given to him by drinking and shortening his life every day. Many believe that he was responsible for his own death. Fitzgerald did not come from a wealthy family; however the family was considered upper- middle class. Fitzgerald was born to Edward and Mollie Fitzgerald on September 24th 1896 In Saint Paul Minnesota. Since his parents were strong Catholics, they sent him to two different private schools. The first one was the Holy Angel in New York, and later after having some money problems they moved back to Minnesota and he tended SST Paul Academy. The most well known school that Fitzgerald went was Princeton. While he was there he wrote for the Nassau magazine as well as the Princeton Tiger school newspaper. He attended Princeton for a few years until World War One began. At the time of the war the country was flooding with nationalism and many young fit boys were enlisting to play their role for their country. And of course Fitzgerald Joins with his fellow classmates. : After Fitzgerald came home from the war, he started his writing career with his first novel, This Side of Paradise. This novel spooned greatly and was an instant, famous American novel at the time. After a few short stories for magazines such as Winter Dreams, he published his second novel, The Great Gatsby. This novel was also a great success and the American public loved his work. Fitzgerald wrote his best work when he was the most popular (Bryant and Pits 5). However, after The Great Gatsby, his career In writing started to go downhill E was dead as an author before he was dead (Chain. E. Charles 77). This was because he and his lovely wife were partying every day, and they had become heavy drinkers. By the near end of Fitzgerald life, everything was completely broken. His wife was in a hospital because she was having Psychotic episodes, and he had a really bad habit of abusing alcohol. He passed away by the age of forty four. Winter Dreams portrays an average American kid growin g up to living the American dream, or at least trying to do so. The story takes place in a few different states throughout the United States. Winter Dreams passes by summer, fall winter and spring quickly showing us how fast time is passing by in the story. Dexter, the main character starts if the story In the state of Minnesota. HIS part time Job was to be a caddie, and he was pretty good at his Job, Dexter falls In love with a beautiful, stunning girl named Judy Jones. However, the fantasies that Dexter has for Judy cannot play out because of the class difference between Judy and Dexter. Judos family is considered wealthy Judy Dexter decides to get rich and become part of the wealthy life. After college Dexter invests in a laundry business at a town near his home town in Minnesota. This brings Dexter a great deal of money and now he is considered rich. Due to the money e now has he tried his best to fit with the wealthy people in the town. However, he will never be like them because of the fact that he is new money while the others are old money. His plan of getting rich and then getting Judy somewhat plays out right; he gets invited to dinner with the Jones family by Judy. When Dexter is in Judy room he knows that she has had many lovers before but he does not seem to care. Time passes by and one day Dexter realizes that Judy does not actually love him, and he realizes how crazy he was being. To get away from his mistakes he marries a girl named Irene and attempts to forget everything he can about Judy. A few years after his marriage Dexter ends up having an affair with Judy, having realized once again how stupid he was being he moved to east New York with his wife. While he was there he decided to Join the army and take part in WWW. When he returns from the war he learns that Judy Jones is now married, and not only that she has lost the stunning beauty Dexter once loved her for. That is when Dexter knows that his Winter Dreams of being with Judy and all of her money is not gone and he cant ever get it back. Winter Dreams and Fitzgerald life have a direct connection to each other. Dexter lives in a Minnesota for most of the short story and then moved to East New York. These were also the two places that Fitzgerald lived during his life time, he was schooled in New York when he was a boy and later moved to Minnesota due to money troubles. The two main characters in the short story, Dexter and Judy, represent Fitzgerald own love life that he has with Zelda. In the short story Dexter proposes to Judy, and gets rejected. This also happened to Fitzgerald when he first reposed to Zelda. Winter Dreams also shows a direct connection to Fitzgerald personal life as well. Fitzgerald took part in World War One and Dexter also Joins the war in the story. Many critics viewed Winter Dreams as the start of Fitzgerald writing career. This was the story that made him popular with the American reading public. And some people believed that Fitzgerald wrote his best works when he was at his highest level of being an author (Bryant 6). The American public responded well to the Winter Dreams which inspired Fitzgerald to make it into a novel. This wows how Fitzgerald liked to use his short stories as experiments to see how the topic or theme is responded to by the readers. Although Fitzgerald wrote many great short stories and novels, some critics believed that, towards the end of his life his works were nothing compared to his earlier works (Bryant 60). Also many people believe that he was responsible for his own death, because of his drinking problems he was shortening his own life. It was considered wasting his great talent of writing stories and novels ( Chain 77). Fitzgerald was one of the greatest American writers to ever lived, he was brought up in an average family and turned out to be wealthy because he chased and earned the American dream. A few stories like, Winter Dreams represents the American dream and his own life. Although he had a tough adulthood with his wife being a in a hospital and him drinking more than ever, he still tried to keep his dream alive.

Inventor Otis Boykin Improved the Electrical Resistor Otis Boykin is best known for inventing an improved electrical resistor used in computers, radios, television sets and a variety of electronic devices.  Boykin invented a variable resistor used in guided missile parts and a control unit for heart stimulators; the  unit was used in the artificial heart pacemaker, a device created to produce electrical shocks to the heart to maintain a healthy heart rate. He patented more than 25  electronic devices, and his  inventions greatly assisted him in overcoming the obstacles that society placed in front of him  during that era of segregation. Boykins inventions also helped the world achieve the technology so prevalent today. Biography of Otis Boykin Otis Boykin was born on Aug. 29, 1920, in Dallas, Texas. After graduating from Fisk University in 1941 in Nashville, Tennessee, he  was employed as a laboratory assistant for the Majestic Radio and TV Corporation of Chicago, testing automatic controls for airplanes. He later became a research engineer with the P.J. Nilsen Research Laboratories, and he eventually founded his own company, Boykin-Fruth Inc. Hal Fruth was his mentor at the time and business partner. Boykin continued his education at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago from 1946 to 1947, but he had to drop out when he could no longer pay tuition. Undeterred, he began to work harder on his own inventions in electronics - including resistors, which  slow the flow of electricity and allow  a safe amount of electricity to move through a device. Boykins Patents He earned his first patent in 1959 for a wire precision resistor, which - according to MIT - allowed for the designation of a precise amount of resistance for a specific purpose. He patented an electrical resistor in 1961 that was easy to produce and inexpensive. This patent - a huge breakthrough in science - had the  ability to â€Å"withstand extreme accelerations and shocks and great temperature changes without danger of breakage of the fine resistance wire or other detrimental effects.† Due to the significant cost reduction of electrical components and the fact that the electrical resistor was more reliable than others on the market, the  U.S. military utilized  this device for guided missiles; IBM used it for computers. The Life of Boykin Boykin’s inventions allowed him to work as a consultant in the United States and in Paris from 1964 to 1982. According to MIT, he  created an electrical capacitor in 1965 and an electrical resistance capacitor in 1967, as well as a number of electrical resistance elements. Boykin also created consumer innovations, including a burglar-proof cash register and a chemical air filter.   The  electrical engineer and inventor  will forever be known as one of the most talented scientists of the 20th century.  He earned the Cultural  Science Achievement Award for his progressive work in the medical field.  Boykin  continued to work on resistors until he died of heart failure in 1982 in Chicago.

Specifically, given that Protestant work ethic stresses that people should be seriously dexterous and taking their social security into their hands, the socioeconomic marginalization of women and non-White Americans has appeared somewhat justifiable, given that white men were the ones appropriating the means of production, accessing opportunities and shouldering responsibilities (McIntosh, 126, 127). In almost the same wavelength, there also seems to be a strong correlation between privilege and the bootstrap myth. Particularly, also known as the meritocracy myth, the bootstrap myth postulates that any person can go to the US with nothing and through the application of virtues such as diligence and upright living; the same could rise into the middle class within three generations. The concept of privilege relates with the bootstrap myth, by compounding it. This is because; those that are socioeconomically advantaged in the society use the bootstrap myth to explain away the reality of socioeconomic disparity that exists between race-based and/ or gender-based social classes. The gravity of the matter immediately above is that the bootstrap myth and the inordinately and unfairly distributed privileges easily conjoin to serve as a tool in the hands of the dominant culture or class. For instance, in the pre-1950s America, Caucasian males used the same to support the idea that the Ame rican society was fair and egalitarian and that race-based or gender-based or ethnic-based discrimination and segregation had been faced out. To this effect, the underdogs such as women and African Americans were underprivileged simply because they were shiftless sluggards. Another way in which the bootstrap myth seems to propound sexist ideas against women is its penchant for overlooking the considerable degree of success that women have made. More than half of women in the US are presently middle class, though this is never mentioned in the bootstrap myth, and thereby helping underscore the suspicion that the theory is always amenable to sexist mindsets. Though various psychologists tend to work in a diverse array of fields one of the common aspects that they all share is that they all study behavior and associate its results to some specific measurements. Psychological tests are some of the common tests that are carried out in this field of psychology. The tests are carried and analyzed then the results are interpreted in such a way so as to attain different attributes for various individuals. One of the interesting things is that these results may vary in accordance with various factors which may either have a positive or negative impact on the tests. These tests have found their way into a number of applications with individuals being tested to determine whether they are up to task to ascertain their levels of performance in a diverse array of fields. The term test in psychology testing is one that has to be defined first in order to determine the workability of the process and the results that should be expected. According to a renowned psychologist Anatasi (1997) the term test as used in the field of psychology, is defined as â€Å"an objective and standardized measure of a sample of behavior†. This very definition tends to bring three core elements of psychology testing. The term objective tends to generally give the idea on how the test score is interpreted meaning that it is as a result of an objective criterion instead of subjective judgment by the examiner. The term standardized in the definition means that the results will be uniform independent of any qualified examiner. The term sample in the definition shows us that the test is drawn from previous collected inferences and results. Most of the psychological tests are categorized into a variety of groups depending on the results and the individuals involved. These tests may be administered to an individual that is one person at a time and they are known as â€Å"individual tests† as compared to â€Å"group tests† which are administered to more that an individual. The tests may differ in that they may be grouped as either â€Å"ability or personality tests†. This means that these types of tests will generally measure an individual’s typical behavior. These types of tests will then be divided into two distinctive groups of either structured or objective personality tests. The structured type of tests require the individual to choose from a variety of two options such as â€Å"true† and â€Å"false† or â€Å"yes† and â€Å"no†. Objective personality tests on the other hand are more complicated in that an individual is required to provide spontaneous responses. This type of testing generally assumes that the individual will tend to produce unique characteristics. The main concept behind these tests is actually to evaluate differences or variations that various individuals may exhibit. One of the assumptions that these tests tend to be pegged upon is that the resultants are actually the real differences among individuals. With this it can then be said that the most important aspect of testing is to generally differentiate among those individuals taking the tests (Domino and Domino, 2006). The three, aptitude, achievement and intelligence are used to determine the types of tests to be performed so as to determine their degree in an individual. Achievement in contrast to aptitude refers to previous learning while aptitude refers to the potential that an individual inhibits to do more. Intelligence on the other hand is distinguished from both achievement and aptitude in the sense that it refers to the general potential an individual has to â€Å"solve problems, adapt to environments and profit from experience†. The three however are believed to be interrelated in one way or another and a term that has been coined up to describe this situation is the term â€Å"human ability† (Kaufman and Kaufman, 2004). Two of these tests; achievement and aptitude tests have found their way in educational and most of the times employment institutions where they are used to deduce an individual’s ability. These tests are used to determine how much an individual knows about a certain aspects such as calculations, spellings or masterly of certain material objects such as practices and the like. Intelligence tests on the other hand try to measure an individual’s ability to basically understand the world and its environment analyze its functionality and use the acquired knowledge to improve the quality of the individual’s life. A renowned psychologist by the name Alfred Whitehead (1929) describes intelligence as having the potential to â€Å"enables the individual to profit by error without being slaughtered by it†. However the measurement of this ability has come under close scrutiny with critics arguing that most tests do not provide clear cut results or fail out rightly. The field of psychological testing is mainly governed by two major principles that is; validity and reliability. The term validity as it used in this field means that the tests and results are useful in whatever the reason they are carried on. On more technical terms the term can be said to represent the degree in which â€Å"certain inferences or interpretations† can be considered to be appropriate (Kaplan and Saccuzzo, 2008). Reliability on the other hand refers to the degree in which the tests and results obtained are free from errors. It refers to the accuracy, consistency, dependability of the test results. Although the concept of psychological testing is becoming an important phenomenon in today’s modern world, controversies have in some cases dogged the otherwise noble idea. One of the aspects that come into play is that most of the tests are usually administered by counselors and if the training is not adequate then the validity and reliability of the tests may be somehow substandard. The issue of ethics also comes into play and when monetary aspects are considered then the issue of ethics may just be thrown out of the window. This is especially true considering the number of individuals especially in the internet who purport to be offering an array of tests which their authenticity does not weigh the balance. Some social and theoretical issues have arisen with the fragile issue of race finding its path to those who vehemently criticize this process. However since nothing will ever be perfect, a compromise is often reached whereby the positives of this process outweigh the disadvantages and thus the process is preferred and applied in many institutions.

Understanding Teens Who Self Injure   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Imagine being sixteen years old and taking a razor to your arm because you feel so much pain inside that cutting is the only way to escape it. For a lot of people this idea seems strange and incomprehensible, but for many teenagers this is their reality. In a society with so much abuse, neglect and crime children are facing things that they never had to face in the past. Adolescents who are lacking more positive coping skills are turning to self-injurious behaviors to ease their pain and frustration.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In recent years the issue of self-injurious behaviors or SIB (White Kress, 2003) has increased in popularity. The general public is starting to take a special interest in the issue as more and more people are doing it. The issue of self-mutilation can be found in movies, television and popular literature today. With increasing media attention people want to understand what these behaviors include, who does it and why. Although researchers agree that more research is needed on the topic, much is already known about these behaviors. About 1% of the general population and 4% of the mental health population suffer from a form of SIB (Shoemaker, 2004). Often times people who suffer from SIB have preexisting mental health disorders such as major depression, Dysthymia, dissociate identity disorder, OCD, substance abuse disorders, adjustment disorders, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and eating disorders (Brittlebank et al. as quoted in White Kress, 2003).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Although there is many different definitions of what SIB is, most researchers would agree that ?SIB is defined as a volitional act to harm one?s body without any intention to die as a result of the behavior? (White Kress, 2003). There are also a lot of different terms out there for these behaviors, they include self-inflicted violence, self-injury, self-harm, parasuicide, cutting, self-abuse, and self-mutilation (Martinson, 2001). Without any intention to die as a result is a very important piece of information when understanding SIB. While many people who self injure do have suicidal ideation, most are not in fact suicidal. ?Menninger described self-mutilation as the focusing of suicidal impulse on part of the body instead of the whole body to avoid actual suicide? (Zila & Kiselica, 2001). Someone who is suicidal wants to end his or her life, howev... ...er from SIB could have suicidal ideation, which at times Lisa does, but I would not consider her suicidal.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Overall, my information was very informative and well written. It gave me a clearer look into the world of SIB and a better understanding of Lisa and what she is dealing with. I definitely think more research needs to be done in the field. Undoubtedly, the new strategy which opens source software in KMS's hit product challenges the current highly successful strategy which prioritizes holding the intellectual property of Amp Up. However, if I were Marty, I would support the new strategy. There are four parts in this paper. 1) analyze a basic but essential issue that why Marty hesitates opening Amp Up's source code; (2) further explain the reasons why the company should accept the open-source strategy; (3)give some recommendations to KMS; (4) draw the conclusion. Teaching Conversational Skills Tips and Strategies Teaching conversational skills can be challenging as not only English skills are required. English students who excel in conversation tend to be those with self-motivated, outgoing personalities. However, students who feel they lack this skill are often shy when it comes to conversation. In other words, personality traits that dominate in everyday life tend to appear in the classroom as well. As English teachers, its our job to help students improve their conversational skills, but often teaching is not really the answer. The Challenge Generally speaking, most English learners feel that they need more conversation practice. Grammar, writing and other skills are all very important, but, for most students, conversation is the most important. Unfortunately, teaching conversational skills is much more challenging than teaching grammar  as the focus is not on accuracy, but on production. When employing role-plays, debates, topic discussions, etc., some students are often timid in expressing their viewpoints. This seems due to a number of reasons: Students dont have an opinion on the subject.Students have an opinion but are worried about what the other students might say or think.Students have an opinion but dont feel they can say exactly what they mean.Students begin giving their opinion but want to state it in the same eloquent manner that they are capable of in their native language.Other, more actively participating students, feel confident in their opinions and express them eloquently making the less confident students more timid. Pragmatically, conversation lessons and exercises should first focus on building skills by eliminating some of the barriers that might be in the way of production. Here are some suggestions to help free up students in conversation. Point out that its not necessary to always speak the truth in class. In fact, not worrying about exactly what happened can help free up students.Create lesson plans that focus on functional skills such as asking for permission, disagreeing, etc. rather than open-ended lessons that students might find vague.Set micro-tasks such as the use of specific verbs, idioms, etc. within overall speaking tasks.  Use tasks such as information gathering or problem-solving activities that encourage students to communicate in English in order to complete the tasks. Here is a closer look at some of these ideas: Focus on Function   Its important to help students become familiar with language functions rather than focusing on a grammar-based approach when developing lessons to help with conversational skills. Start off simple with functions such as: Asking permission, stating an opinion, ordering food in a restaurant, etc.   Explore grammar issues by asking what linguistic formulas should be used to achieve the desired results. For example, if you are comparing two sides of an argument which forms might be helpful (comparative, superlative, would rather, etc). Use formulas to encourage correct usage such as: How / What about Verb Ing for making suggestions - How about taking a trip to San Diego?Would you mind Verb Ing for making requests -  Would you mind giving me a hand?Would you rather Verb or Verb  for asking for preferences -  Would you rather take the train or drive? Expand this approach slowly by asking students to create short role plays using cue cards. Once students become comfortable with target structures and representing differing points of view, classes can move onto more elaborated exercises such as debates and group decision-making activities.   Assign Points of View Ask students to take on a specific viewpoint. Sometimes, its a good idea to ask students to try to state opinions that they dont necessarily share. Having been assigned roles, opinions, and points of view that they do not necessarily share, students are freed from having to express their own opinions. Therefore, they can focus on expressing themselves well in English. In this way, students tend to concentrate more on production skills, and less on factual content. They also are less likely to insist on literal translations from their mother tongue. This approach bears fruit especially when debating opposing points of view. By representing opposing points of view, students imaginations are activated by trying to focus on all the various points that an  opposing  stand on any given issue may take. As students inherently do not agree with the view they represent, they are freed from having to invest emotionally in the statements  they make. More importantly, from a pragmatic point of view, students tend to focus more on correct function and structure when they do not become too emotionally involved in what they are saying. Of course, this is not to say that students should not express their own opinions. After all, when students go out into the real world they will want to say what they mean. However, taking out the personal investment factor can help students first become more confident in using English. Once this confidence is gained, students - especially timid students - will be more self-assured when expressing their own points of view. Focus on Tasks Focusing on tasks is quite similar to focusing on function. In this case, students are given specific tasks they must complete in order to do well. Here are some suggestions on tasks that can help students practice their conversational skills: Create student surveys to gather information.Teamwork activities such as treasure hunts.Board games.Build something - group activities such as a science project or presentations allow everyone to join in the fun.
